Harry & Meghan Gear Up for Transcontinental Royal Family Summit

Queen Elizabeth and other family members will conference call with Harry and Meghan about their desire to exit their full-time Royal duties.

Harry and Meghan are in a real stew with Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family.

I like to follow the doings of the Royals: I am originally from London. Raised by my wonderful British parents, I learned from an early age how revered the Queen is and also how important tradition is in the UK. Even today, it’s that way.

Flash forward to last Wednesday's unexpected announcement: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex want to exit their royal duties and live half time in North America -- Canada, specifically.

Getting approval for such a lifestyle would be extraordinary. The comparison to King Edward VIII abdicating the throne in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson is undeniable.

Is Harry choosing love over duty? It’s hard to say and it’s also not clear if he would have made this decision on his own or if he was influenced by Meghan.

As a Royal, you are under a microscope and in effect, your life is not your own—you belong to the public—as the taxpayers are footing a hefty bill to help support you.

Meghan Markle (remember the coined term the 'Markle Sparkle’?) seems to have fallen from grace with some Brits. In a well-televised TV interview she admitted that she knew her role would be ‘tough’ but she thought it would be 'fair,' too. Perhaps too direct for some?

It is terrible that the 38-year-old Duchess of Sussex, who is biracial,  has experienced racism via social media and the press. Being a new wife and new mother to 8-month-old Archie plus moving to a foreign culture would stress anyone.

Prince Harry, for the longest time, has stated that he blames the paparazzi, for his beloved mother Princess Diana’s death. After all, they were chasing her at a high rate of speed in a Paris tunnel.

Diana was loved by the public but it seems that Meghan is getting mixed reviews. Alternately, Prince William's wife Duchess Catherine is generally more popular.

Rumors have swirled around that the brothers Harry and William are at cross purposes. I read today that William wants Harry and Meghan 'as far away as possible.'

Anyone who was not familiar with Royal protocol would have a terrible time adapting to being a Royal—particularly one as strong-willed and independent as Meghan. In this regard, Kate fits in better because she understands British culture from her upbringing. This is not a criticism of Meghan but an observation.

I worked in London a number of years ago and it was an adjustment for me—even though I lived in that culture as a child. Things are different. People tend to be more reserved.

Hopefully, there will be a meeting of the minds between the Queen, her family and grandson. One final comment -- I'm surprised Harry didn't talk to Queen Elizabeth first privately. The 93-year-old monarch is his grandmother and that should have come first -- as Harry didn't abdicate before he married.
