Getting Through Burnout

It's tough staying balanced in life to avoid burning out.

“I just want to know when you actually sleep,” a friend commented to me not long ago. It caught me a bit off guard since I’ve been struggling to find more energy in my day and feel that I sleep more than most. Productivity has never been an issue for me, but I do wonder about how to get more out of life.

Will a low-carb or keto diet help me maintain higher focus and extended energy? Am I spending enough time on my hobbies? What can I do to stave off burnout?

Burnout is real and I am always working to keep a level of balance in my life to prevent it. Bottom line is I love what I do: writing, creating, marketing, and building businesses. But there are weeks where it seems like my mind can’t quite grab the right words or focus on the screen.

When you think about burnout, you generally get the vision of someone who simply no longer cares about anything. There isn’t joy in work or any personal pursuits. For me, burnout creeps in much more subtly. It robs me of clarity and frustrates me from getting things done that I truly still care about completing.

What do you do when you feel burnout coming?

It’s easy to say, “be kind to yourself, take care of you.” But this doesn’t always work quickly. You can find yourself vacillating between the knowledge that you need to care for yourself with the conflict of not getting the stuff done that you need to. That’s a place that risks a greater spiral downward.

Recently, I came across a person’s Facebook ad (I can’t recall the author) who said that when he is experiencing burnout, he adds something to his life. It sounds counterintuitive to most but I actually agree. For me, the inner desire to find a non-work creative outlet such as an improv class has been on my mind. While I don’t want to add anything to my plate, the creative satisfaction of jumping in and doing something purely for enjoyment would spark other creative juices.

That’s the idea and that is what this coach was discussing. Sometimes you need to make yourself busier to become more efficient in your work and feel more fulfilled in all you do. Give more energy to get more energy. It's a crazy idea, but one I think that works.

What do you do to rebalance yourself?
