For the Left, Hyperbolic Hysteria has Replaced Principled Opposition

Democrats and their allies have been reduced to ridiculously overwrought reactions to everything the president does.

You have to hand it to the Democrats and their liberal and leftist cohorts. For nearly three years now, they have managed to sustain a level of opprobrium against President Trump that is as impressive in its endurance as it is disturbing in its temperament. Sure, the novelty of their escalating rhetoric – and worse – against Donald Trump since Nov. 8, 2016, has worn off. Overall, however, those opposed to Trump haven’t lost their penchant for blowing right past honorable disagreement and parking themselves in crazy town.

An examination of two recent events reveals the hate still flows through Trump’s political enemies in a way that can’t be healthy. The response by those on the left side of the political aisle to the July 4 “Salute to America” event and the growing humanitarian crisis on the U.S. southern border indicates – and you’ll pardon the medical lingo – a severe loss of marbles.

Trump’s Independence Day extravaganza at the National Mall – including a military parade and a speech by the president – was by all accounts a smashing success that attracted a huge crowd and was largely nonpartisan in nature.

Naturally, critics couldn’t confine their displeasure to reasonable observations about how atypical it is for an American president to insert himself into July 4 proceedings, or rib Trump’s obsession with a massive military parade ever since he attended a Bastille Day celebration in Paris two years ago, ordering a Veterans Day parade in 2018 that had to be scrapped due to a high price tag.

Instead what we got – before the event took place – was nonsensical moral equivalency like this from Harvard Law professor Laurence H. Tribe:

Despite the worst fears of Tribe and his ilk, Trump did not morph into a dictator on the spot, and he did not initiate a massacre.

Meanwhile, Democrats – in a whiplash-inducing display of cognitive dissonance – set a land speed record in going from claiming there was no humanitarian disaster related to immigrants flooding into America via Mexico, to now telling anyone who will listen the temporary warehousing of immigrants in detention facilities never designed to hold so many people is akin to the Holocaust – that is, a humanitarian crisis on steroids.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez masked any legitimate concerns she and others have about the federal government’s treatment of immigrants in its custody by making an ill-advised and historically ignorant comparison of detention facilities to the mechanized genocide of 6 million people by Nazi Germany.

Because nothing says “loyal opposition” like comparing the current administration to the Third Reich.

It remains to be seen if the Democratic Party – its far left presidential candidates consumed with an utterly irrational hatred for the president – will fully turn to the dark side of politics, handing Trump a second term.
