"Fighting With My Family": A Movie About Big Dreams

"Fighting With My Family" depicts wrestler Paige's journey to the NXT and WWE stages. The movie has overarching themes of family and chasing one's dreams, no matter how wild they may seem to others.

Saraya-Jade Bevis, perhaps better known by her wrestling name, Paige, was considered the anti-diva of wrestling with her gothic style both in and out of the ring. Paige is also known for her movie, Fighting With My Family, depicting her journey to wrestling, as NXT’s Women’s Champion, and for making history as the youngest Diva to hold a wrestling title. Paige’s journey from teaching at her parents’ wrestling school and competing in England to lifting tires during try-outs for NXT and WWE to competing in nationally-televised NXT matches in the United States isvery inspiring.

What I loved most about Fighting With My Family was the seemingly-dysfunctional dynamic of Paige's family. This movie depicts a sort of “wrestling family”. The family watched televised wrestling events with their children, owned several replicas of champion belts, and even practiced wrestling moves together on mats in their home. The home contained many pieces of art depicting skulls as well. Though it wasn’t a typical family, they loved each other. I found it interesting how the family bonded from wrestling matches, particularly through the performance that is televised wrestling, and also from playing different roles in the wrestling school the family owned. Each member of Paige’s household got to participate in the wrestling school, whether it be Paige’s brothers picking up students in the van or Paige watching and teaching classes as they went on.

I admired how Paige and her brothers, Zak Zodiac and Roy Bevis, learned life lessons from helping to run and teach at the wrestling school. Not only did it give Paige, Zodiac, and Bevis an idea of what it takes to run a real-world business, but they got the chance to interact with all kinds of students with various backgrounds and skill levels. The most prominent example that comes to mind is the blind student who attended classes at the wrestling school in the movie’s storyline. The brothers picked him up in the van before class and, during class, Paige assisted him in practice matches as he practiced moves with opponents. Essentially, this seemed to show the siblings-- and the audience as well-- that anyone can wrestle and everyone, no matter how challenging it may be, deserves to follow their dreams.

Ultimately, Fighting With My Family has overarching themes of perseverance and chasing one’s dreams, no matter how big they may seem. Paige attends more intense preparation for the WWE, which included flipping large tires across a field. Though intense, Paige was focused on her dream of being a professional wrestler for the WWE. Had Paige grown wary from these intense workouts, she might not have ever achieved titles from her time competing in the NXT division. Additionally, she might not have had her role on WWE Backstage, a talk show regarding the WWE and its storylines, and her ever-changing role behind-the-scenes at WWE today.
