Entrepreneurs Lead Push Back Against Authoritarian Control

As government officials and bureaucrats power grab through mandated shut downs of industry, business owners and entrepreneurs just say no and head back to work. Their sovereign exercise in conducting commerce serves as a reminder that freedom isn't radical, but it does require vigilance.

As the nation held its collective breath earlier this spring in anticipation of the millions of COVID-19 deaths, the reality of the health drama fizzled. At the same time, the stark bruising of a hard economic stop set in quickly for Dallas-based Salon A la Mode owner Shelly Luther and her staff of stylists.

Suddenly a reasonably-secure life provided through a universally necessary service became precarious.

As zero-risk fell nowhere on the horizon, official approval for the reopening of business was simply too long to wait.

Luther reopened the salon, and she stood her ground after her arrest. At the court hearing, she told the judge that her decision to reopen her business wasn't out of defiance. More simply, Luther reopened because she and the stylists she employs needed to work in order to feed their kids.

On another front, Elon Musk, industrialist and founder of Palo Alto, California-based Tesla Inc. also called out state and county officials' overreach in response to COVID-19. As Musk began lawsuit threats against Alameda County for throttling the car maker's operations, California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez counter-productively tweeted "F*ck Elon Musk."

"Tesla is restarting production today against Alameda County rules," Musk tweeted out on May 11. "I will be on the line with everyone else," he continued, and then offered a dare: "If anyone is arrested, I ask that it only be me."
