Do What's Right for the Party — and the Country

The Republicans will run on two issues in the 2018 midterms: (1) Donald Trump and (2) Nancy Pelosi. The Democrats cannot do much about the first issue (without the assistance of Robert Mueller) — it looks like Trump is here to stay until 2020. But the second is another story.
For the good of her party, and her country, Minority Leader Pelosi should announce today that she will not run for, and will not accept, the position of Speaker of the House should the Democrats take control of that chamber in November. This move will accomplish several things.
First, it takes the seminal issue away from the Republicans. No more campaign ads with a grainy picture of Pelosi staring into the camera. No more commentary about the Democrats being out of step because their aging leaders (Pelosi is 78) are no longer in tune with the younger generations that traditionally formed a solid foundation of the party. The issue is simply removed.
Second, it allows the Democrats to tout the credentials of a new generation of party leaders such as Julián Castro (43), Linda Sánchez (49), Joseph P. Kennedy III (37), Seth Moulton (39), Tim Ryan (44) and maybe even newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (28). There are many more names that could be put on this list, but unless the party elders start moving them all to leadership positions to demonstrate their worth as legislators, the party will be labeled as old and out of touch.
And then the run against Trump is simplified — the Democrats become the sole defenders of the rule of law, sensible immigration policy, the environment, civil rights for all, meaningful health care reform, among many others.
The plan seems simple, don’t you think Nancy? For the good of your party and the country, please gracefully step aside. Act as a mentor to your rising stars. Lead by example. Chuck (67) and Steny (79), does this make sense to you, too?
