Did California Have a Normal Winter?

For the last 10-years, California has had some unusual weather.

Living in the Sierra Nevada Mountains we saw, this year, a typical winter for California, and we may even be on track to have a normal summer as well, cold at the beginning followed by a hot Indian summer to cap it off. But, for the last 10-years it seems, we have had crazy summers and winters.

As an example, bears and other hibernating animals would be out roaming around at this time of the year, but we haven’t, so far, heard of animals coming out of their deep sleep.

This could be that the weather in the Sierras is still too cold to wake them up from sleeping. Last year we heard stories of animals, especially bears, coming out of their deep sleep near the beginning of March and looking for food.

When animals come out of hibernation they have lost weight by giving birth to their young, and by using their fat for food while they hibernate.

Does this have to do with the heavy amount of snow on the ground keeping the area cold, and therefore their bodies still think it’s winter time?

When the weather changes and if it gets hot enough for the snow to melt throughout the day and night, there will be a big change in California. Remember, the water in the snow has to go somewhere, and if the small dams are filled, the water will then run out and start to flood the closest area. And once that area is flooded, the water will move on to other areas in the state. But if the Sierras stay cold enough, the run off will remain slow and and flooding will be light.

Let’s hope the weather does not heat up too fast in the Sierras, so we don’t have a fast run-off and flooding.
