This is not just a case of 'he said, she said.' The televised trial tackles issues of sexual violence, domestic violence, addiction, and how the public perceives celebrities.
Much has been said about the Johnny Depp Vs. Amber Heard trial. Depp still has that undeniable charisma and quirkiness that transfers well to the screen. Movie stars have that 'it' factor you cannot manufacture. It's a presence that draws you in and gets its teeth into you. Magnificent Elizabeth Taylor had 'it.' I saw a Tonight Show interview she did with the great Johnny Carson. You cannot take your eyes off her.
Working as a radio reporter, I met Paul Newman briefly at a premiere years ago: I had never seen blue eyes that color. The gorgeous Mr. Newman made me feel like a giant. Newman said (I'll never forget it) "No, I'm pleased to meet YOU" That made my year!
Current actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Leo DiCaprio, and Idris Elba also have that nebulous quality. If you can attract people, box office sales soar -- a simple formula.
Depp maintains a bad-boy persona, with tattoos, jewelry, and a quiet bravado. He is highly creative, a musician, and a painter. I am not as familiar with Heard's onscreen work, but I have seen her as a spokesperson/model for L'Oreal.
The Pirates franchise made Johnny Depp a rich man and opened doors for other opportunities. Depp mentioned in court that he's been in the business for 36 years. But we see footage of the actor in most comprising positions -- slamming cabinets in what appears to be a drunken or drug-inspired rampage, fast asleep at the wheel, and writing with his blood.
Ex-wife Amber Heard said she wanted to document Depp's behavior. Depp shared recordings of Heard belittling him, by name-calling and badgering. She's been caught. It is speculation, but this appears to be a classic example of a toxic union. Love and chemistry are not enough: some people bring out the worst in each other.
It is a shame Disney and Warner Brothers cut ties with Depp. Even at Depp's stature, you can't show up late. Heard allegedly got cast in Aquaman because of Depp's influence-but nepotism exists in all fields: you can't blame her.
People have called Heard 'snarky.' She does not carry the fan-based support Depp enjoys. He is garnering more public support--although they've both been shown in hideous lights.
Depp's star power is supported by the number of fans who line up to see him. Heard has fewer supporters. The trial has brought out the worst in spectators, too. Some Depp fans allegedly threatened Heard's young daughter. Menacing remarks are always unacceptable!
The jury is deliberating. The ugly angles of emotional and physical abuse in intimate relationships have been exposed. Abuse is never OK. But no matter what the jury decides, I predict that Johnny Depp's star will soar. Everybody loves a comeback. Amber Heard will work, but I'm not sure how the trial's verdict will impact her long-term success in the entertainment industry. But in the court of public opinion, Johnny Depp has already landed on top.
