Democrats' Mixed Message on Post-Election Unity

Presumptive President-elect Joe Biden’s calls for reconciliation ring hollow in light of past and present Democratic rhetoric and shenanigans.

Joe Biden — the apparent next president of the United States following last week's election — has since made the usual plea for Americans to come together after a bruising, contentious and heated campaign.

Of course, Biden's traditional post-election desire for Americans to close ranks comes after four years of Democrats claiming the following about President Trump: He is a Russian stooge who stole the 2016 election. He is an illegitimate president. He is racist, sexist and xenophobic. He is a contemporary Adolf Hitler. He must be resisted 100 percent. Everything he says is a lie. He is stupid. He is not my president.

And of course, no one can forget Democrats* launched an ill-advised impeachment attempt against Trump on the thinnest of grounds. Also unforgettable: the way Democrats demonized the president's supporters as backwater rubes who don't know any better.

Naturally, many Republicans and conservatives are skeptical of Biden's stated good intentions, as well they should be, considering the disturbing talk coming from prominent folks on the left. Last month, Robert Reich — former Labor secretary under President Clinton — called for the creation of a truth and reconciliation commission to "erase Trump's lies" and expose those who "enabled" them. That a guy with the surname Reich would put forth such a vaguely totalitarian idea is ironic.

But he isn't the only one floating such vindictive ideas. Progressive poster gal, the always bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, recently tweeted, "Is anyone archiving these Trump sycophants for when they try to downplay or deny their complicity in the future? I foresee a decent probability of many deleted Tweets, writings, photos in the future."

It has apparently not occurred to AO-C that compiling an enemies list is traditionally the domain of dictators and despots.

Disturbingly, there is something called the "Trump Accountability Project" seemingly formed for the purpose of blacklisting anyone who has ever worked for, supported in any way, or committed the crime of having a positive thought about Trump.

Like moths to a flame, several Democrats flocked to endorse the idea of purging such undesirables from politics, media and corporate America. They include, among others, Hari Sevugan, a former spokesman for the Democratic National Committee and for President Obama; Michael Simon, who worked for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign; and Emily Abrams, a former aide to 2020 presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

Again, the incongruity of viewing Trump as an authoritarian and a fascist while calling for de facto witch hunts and show trials — cancel culture on steroids — eludes Trump Accountability Project supporters. Then again, their visceral hatred of Trump renders them blind to the fact they are backing a political inquisition — a modern-day leftist McCarthyism, if you will.

Two-faced hypocrisy is hardly the stuff of reconciliation and unity.

*Apparently Democrats forgot, since they barely mentioned anything about it after the fact.
