Democrats’ Impeachment Farce 2.0

The questionable Senate trial of private citizen Donald Trump will be a platform for virtue-signaling Democrats still obsessed with the former president.

It’s political déjà vu in Washington, D.C, as January 2021 in the nation’s capital looks and feels a lot like January 2020. That’s because just like last year at about this time, Democrats have impeached Donald Trump, even though he is no longer president of the United States as of about noon on Jan. 20. A Senate trial is set for the week of Feb. 8.

Amazingly, this second attempt at impeaching and convicting the country’s most recent ex-president is coming off as even more sketchy than Democrats’ first oddly Trump-specific such endeavor — you know, when Trump was actually president — that was unlike any past impeachment in U.S. history.

The Senate may not even have authority to try Trump, owing to the relevant wording at the very end of Article II of the Constitution establishing that a constitutionally aberrant “President, … shall be removed from Office” if first impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate for “high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

That jurisdictional black hole aside, several other clues attest to the fact the current impeachment and upcoming trial are little more than a pointless exercise in political theater for Trump-hating Democrats (and possibly some Republicans).

The impeachment article itself charges Trump with inciting an insurrection against the U.S. government, which is a massive overreach, given that nobody can show where in Trump’s Jan. 6 address he told his followers to attack the Capitol building.

“I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard,” Trump told the crowd.

Trump can rightly be criticized for sticking to the false narrative the election was stolen from him and for his detached and lackadaisical response to the riot at the Capitol, but those do not an insurrection incite.

The way Democrats have conducted impeachment and the impending trial only bolsters the notion this is vindictive piling-on of an ex-president, rather than fealty to one of the Constitution’s most solemn duties.

That there has been no investigation, nor any House hearings of any kind to substantiate the insurrection charge leveled at Trump bespeaks of a lack of seriousness on the part of Democrats in control of the impeachment process, as does the fact Rep. Eric Swalwell — embroiled in a China spy scandal of his own — has been named an impeachment manager, with Sen. Patrick Leahy to officiate the trial, because the constitutional mandate the chief justice of the Supreme Court preside over the impeachment trial of the president does not apply.

With disqualifying Trump from running for president again (Democrats’ ultimate goal) contingent upon an unlikely conviction in the Senate, Trump — out of office and out of Washington, D.C. — continues to live rent-free in the heads of his erstwhile political opponents.

Trump Derangement Syndrome, it seems, will continue long past Trump’s term in office.
