Democrats Have Officially Forgotten DACA
Democrats in Congress have left Dreamers in the dust as they pass the $1.3 Trillion Omnibus this week.
This Tuesday Chuck Schumer led a press conference after the Democratic luncheon with several other members of his party to peddle another $1.3 Trillion in wasteful spending through an omnibus none of them had any intention of reading. But what Democrats may not have realized, is that once the President signs the bill they will have lost the battle over DACA.
In January Democrats in the Senate were willing, and successful, in shutting the government down when they voted against a continuing resolution over the lack of a DACA fix which Trump had repealed in September.
Chuck Schumer took a gamble and lost when Democrats chose to take a stand for Dreamers and were blamed for the resulting shutdown, then had nothing to show for it when they were forced to pass a budget to open it back up.
Learning from their mistake in January, Democrats chose to join the rest of Congress in a collective kick of the can down the road, and voted for an omnibus with no protection for the Dreamers who had been the main reason for shutting the government down only two months ago.
But congress gets away with passing the spending bill by pointing to the small portions of it they find politically salient to rationalize the majority of it, which is exactly what this press conference was for. As each of the members stood in front of the podium they touted spending measures they could now take responsibility for.
As Chuck Schumer took questions at the end of his press conference, he ignored the first question asking for details on the Omnibus. Then, when asked if voters could expect any other big legislation before November he gave an unsurprising yet politically safe answer, infrastructure, signaling that Dreamers were officially forgotten by Democrats.
But then a third reporter quickly reminded him. When someone asked him about what would be done for Dreamers he averted his focus and irritation entered his tone, he responded “The one official offer from the president was off the table right when they offered it, it was so biased.”
In fact, the President and had offered the Democrats a fix for DACA, a three-year extension in exchange for $25 billion in border wall funding. So only several months after shutting the government down over a lack of DACA legislation, Democratic leadership turned down a deal to extend it for three years in favor of passing a budget lacking the compromise.
The hard truth of the matter is that Democrats never cared about Dreamers, at least not more than midterms in November. Now, Democrats see standing up to Trump and refusing a compromise on DACA as more favorable than a solution, and also not passing a solution as more favorable than putting their heads in the sand like they did in January and shutting the government down again. Hence the expedient passage of the wasteful and irresponsible Omnibus with nothing on DACA.
