Crisis at the Border - What's the Solution?

There is only one solution to the border crisis, and it does not involve appealing to the hardships facing illegal migrants.

Ironically, an act of appeasement by President Trump seemingly made the left angrier regarding the administration’s illegal immigration policy. Trump’s executive order is simple - it allows children of migrant families to stay with their families while the adults are prosecuted as criminals for attempting to illegally cross the border.

For the left, the problem seems to be the fact that migrants attempting to enter the country illegally are even deemed “illegal.” In order to enforce the existing border, there’s a process by which those who try to cross the border outside of established ports of entry are detained and deported, although it’s currently poorly managed and overwhelmed. Rather than trying to improve this process, the left is trying to undermine it - something that’s been on its agenda for decades.

In the effort to protect human rights, certain policies are in place to protect different types of migrants. One policy, which is the main point of controversy right now, is that children of illegal migrant families aren’t allowed to be detained for more than 20 days if they're unaccompanied by their parents or guardians. Before Trump’s zero-tolerance policy, these children were either released to relatives living inside the United States or returned to their families who were waiting to have their cases heard.

In practice, although some of these families were eventually deported, many were simply released, as there’s a limited amount of time these families can be detained without being charged with a crime. This is what President Trump is trying to change. In the effort to enforce existing immigration law, the administration is now criminally prosecuting migrants who are crossing the border illegally.

This policy infuriates the left because it closes the door to their attempt to use heartbreaking imagery and audio of children being separated from their families to achieve their real objective, which is to release the children with their families into the country before their cases are heard.

Unfortunately for President Trump, this will be a difficult policy to implement and enforce because of the sheer number of migrants flooding the border. Detention centers are overflowing, and the courts are so backed up with pending cases that some families will have to wait years before their cases can be heard. It is difficult to justify the extensive infrastructure and resources needed to sustain this operation in the long run.

Consequently, the only real solution to this problem is to eliminate the possibility of illegal border crossings by building the wall. For President Trump, it’s crucial that the wall gets built quickly, as it will be a major political blow to Trump’s reelection bid if he doesn’t have the border secured by the time he campaigns in 2020. The current crisis at the border illuminates the practical need for the wall more than ever before, and it will be the only way President Trump can win the battle over illegal immigration and border security for the years to come.
