Covid-19 Has Shed Light on What America Truly Values

Trump's image as a leader or an enforcer in handling this pandemic is revealing of America's attitude towards freedom.

At the epicenter of the COVID-19 response is President Trump, who has been faced with a test more consequential than any he has ever had. How Trump continues to navigate through a crisis that, though heavily politicized, has now cost the lives of over 70,000 Americans will be key to shaping his public image from now until Election Day. Towing the line between Americans suffering from unemployment and Americans suffering from a deadly disease has proven to be a difficult task for the President.

Up to this point, Trump, after shrugging off early concerns of the virus’s spread when it first appeared in Seattle, has done a complete 180 in terms of acknowledging the threat and has focused his full attention on combating the "invisible enemy," as he calls it. Trump’s social distancing guidelines have resonated throughout the country, prompting states and municipalities into action -- effectively shutting down the national economy.

Hardline Libertarians and many Conservatives have disagreed with this response and argue that Trump should have done nothing beyond providing necessary aid, letting states and municipalities handle the outbreak largely on their own. Despite the merits of this argument, the die was cast by the media as well as both moderate and liberal politicians that the President was expected to take action lest the blame for every life lost by the Coronavirus would be placed squarely on his shoulders.

Ironically, one of the Left’s fundamental critiques of Trump is that he’s an authoritarian; yet the political and expert consensus has been that Trump must use his executive authority to slow the spread of the virus. Therefore, the Left’s attitude towards Trump as compared to its zealous commitment to shutting down America is hypocritical.

It seems as though our leaders on both sides of the aisle have forgotten about the beauty of Federalism, which gives states the authority to govern themselves freely and independently with minimal interference from a limited federal government. With respect to the current pandemic, this should have allowed all 50 states to act appropriately based on the needs and concerns of their people. A nationwide experiment would have emerged, which would have demonstrated to us the policies that were too hands-off or too overbearing in the effort to stop the spread.

Because of the iron fist of our centralized government, many counterfactuals to its response will never be brought to light. Moreover, the claim that the nationwide lockdown will end up saving millions of lives will prove to be unfalsifiable. Trump will be able to take credit for both our eventual recovery and a lower final death toll than it would have been without his intervention.

Contrary to how the Left envisions Trump’s fate, Trump will benefit from the fact that we will never know how many deaths were averted because of the lockdown, and he will emerge from this dark tunnel as a larger-than-life figure. Unfortunately, such an outcome will prove that America doesn’t value freedom as much as she purports.
