It took decades for Blake Shelton to become an 'overnight success.' Now the 6-time Grammy winner has something else to sing about. Shelton was just honored with the 2,755th star on the Walk of Fame.
Last Friday, May 12 was a big day for country crooner Blake Shelton, who was honored by getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The "Voice" coach has been a fixture in the music scene for almost three decades. Shelton's songs have streamed 11 billion times worldwide, and he has sold 13 million albums and 52 million singles. The tall and handsome artist is a triple threat--he writes, plays guitar, and sings his tunes. If this is not enough, Shelton has garnered 28 #1 country hits, not too shabby for a kid from Oklahoma who began performing at 17.
Gwen Stefani was on hand to celebrate with her husband. The singer/actress who was the frontwoman for the new wave band No Doubt in the mid-80s met Shelton on "The Voice." Stefani was also a celebrity coach on the highly-rated reality show for aspiring singers. The two megastars were each going through traumatic divorces when they met and undoubtedly found common ground in their love for music. Shelton had been married to country singer Miranda Lambert, and Stefani had been the wife of rocker Gavin Rossdale. Shelton, 46, and Stefani, 53, tied the knot 2 years ago after dating for several years. Shelton became stepfather to his beautiful wife's three young sons.
As important as his family is to Blake Shelton, his music is his life force too. Variety Magazine recently said Shelton "changed the face of country music." The singer/songwriter has a rich baritone voice that speaks of a different era in country music. His sound is reminiscent of the great country artists of previous generations, like George Jones. And it was interesting that one of Shelton's non-country heroes was the late Dean Martin, a contemporary crooner with a laid-back attitude that transcended other singers. An early hit called "The Baby" is a signature song that showcases Shelton's classic ballad style in a touching tribute to his late mother.
Shelton also conveys an approachable quality that highlights his sincerity. It is who he is. That's why he has been so successful as a coach on "The Voice" for the past twelve seasons. The boyish looks and southern twang are genuine.
This year marks Shelton's final year as a coach. Adam Levine of Maroon 5, who had become a good friend, exited his coach seat in May of 2019. Levine was on hand when Shelton got his star in Hollywood.
Getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is no easy task. There are 2,755 stars' names set into the sidewalk along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street. The stars have 5 points and are made of terrazzo and brass. Heavy hitters in the entertainment industry are nominated under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce. Blake Shelton, acknowledged his work in the recording industry, joins the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Gene Autry, and, more recently, rapper Ludacris, among others.
