Conservative Surrender Fueled "Crisis in the Humanities"

The current “Crisis in the Humanities,” illustrated by Benjamin Schmidt’s graph, is that students are “voting with their feet” to pursue STEM instead of Liberal Arts. He says this is due to economic pressures, but a contributing factor was Conservatives who steered students into STEM to escape PC indoctrination—thus ceding the Humanities to those who wished to “subvert the dominant paradigm.”

The current “Crisis in the Humanities,” illustrated by Benjamin Schmidt’s graph above, is that students are “voting with their feet” to pursue STEM instead of Liberal Arts.

He believes this is due to economic pressures, but I think a contributing factor was Conservatives who steered students into STEM to escape PC indoctrination—thus ceding the Humanities to those who wished to “subvert the dominant paradigm.”

Jordan Peterson has called them “Postmodernists."

"You need to understand postmodernism, because that's what you're up against. You're up against it far more than you know or think, and it's a much more well-developed and pervasive, pernicious, nihilistic, intellectually attractive doctrine than has yet come to public realization. It absolutely dominates the humanities and increasingly the social sciences in the universities."

How did such a repellent intellectual paradigm, one that literally drives students away from education, manage to take over the Humanities?

The explanation is simple. Surrender.

Instead of fighting back, Conservatives withdrew from the conflict, rationalizing their decision by claiming, in my view falsely, that what happened in Universities didn’t affect “the real world” and that students would earn more with STEM degrees. President George W. Bush dropped efforts to eliminate the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities.

Others called for the end of Universities, fantasizing the internet could replace student-teacher relationships as old as Socrates.

The result was predictable.

Instead of promoting free intellectual inquiry, higher education became simultaneously corporatized and dedicated to political agitation, fueled by upon subsidies from the Federal Government through grants, contracts, non-dischargeable student loans -- a medieval form of debt peonage, with teaching based upon the exploitation of surplus labor by serf-like adjuncts.

This hostile intellectual climate inevitably produced a number of Antifa members charged with violent attacks who turned out to be professors or schoolteachers.

Not only has the Conservative approach permitted the virus of PC spread from campus to the “real world,” as Heather MacDonald has documented in her new book, The Diversity Delusion, it has now compromised STEM fields as well. Medicine, engineering, psychology, physics, IT, even Math, now manifest symptoms appearing in the Humanities in the last century.

Ignoring the disease, as Conservatives have done since the 1990s, sanctioned it to spread. By allowing the Humanities to become corrupted, they permitted all of society to become corrupted.

The cure must begin at the source, which is in the Humanities programs that provide the philosophical foundations of a free society. They are fundamental—not optional.

To cure a disease, one must first diagnosis it.  In this case the disease has a name: Political Correctness.

The prescription is obvious: Politically Correct faculty must be purged ASAP, in order to save the Humanities.

Since PC Thought Police have shown no objections to blacklisting, one principle must guide this effort: No tolerance for the intolerant.

Those who silence civilized debate must be expelled if they are students...and if faculty or administrators finally hear Donald Trump’s timeless Apprentice line:

“You’re fired!”
