Computer Catastrophe

The worst happened, and I was unprepared. Don't let this happen to you!

I turned off my computer a few nights ago, smiling to myself at what I'd wrote (including this week's initial article). Everything seemed fine. The next morning, my computer goes to the dreaded DOS screen and before I can even hit a prompt, it goes to "Unable to start computer, attempting to System Restore". A Cylon-eye (Battlestar Galactica, kiddies!) bar scrolls left to right, making it look like the computer was trying to fix itself. I waited... and waited - as patience morphed to panic. Two hours later and the same loop was still going on, and I knew I was in trouble.

Now I'm not a total computer illiterate. I know how to change the boot sequence in DOS (and other basic DOS tasks), I can write simple HTML and XTML code and, most importantly, I know the importance of having an external hard drive to back up important files. And usually I do just that. But I've been on a bit of a writing and recording spree lately and I guess I got a little lazy. So Murphy decided to pay me a visit and lay down his law. Everything from the past month... GONE!!!

After screaming, pulling out my hair and inhaling some cold and calming barley bevvies, I re-assessed the situation. What did I really lose? Some photos, some new independent songs for my radio show (420 Show on www.revolutionxradio.ca, BTW) and the stuff I've been writing. The writing was obviously the biggest loss - 15 unfinished short stories and 3 unfinished (nay, barely started) screenplays. But was it the biggest loss? As much as I like to tell myself I've been writing at a fervorous pace over the past few weeks... I was pecking. The ideas are still in my head, and the truth is, if they were THAT fantastic, I would've have dug in enough to at least finish a first draft. So my anger and panic shifted to disappointment and a good reality check. Writers write. Wannabes peck and dream. And I no longer want to be that peck n'dream guy.

My other computer is up and running, everything is back (the worst, forgotten passwords) except for the lost writing. But guess what? I'm starting new stuff. It will make it to at least "sh*tty first draft" and will be put on to the external hard drive. And I'm going to kick Murphy in his Irish green 'nads the next time I see him!

By the way, if you do experience a system crash like mine, there is a smidgen of hope: Neosmart Technologies (and others) has a Windows (7, 8, Vista, XP, and 10) recovery .iso file that you can purchase online for a marginal fee and can burn onto a CD or flash drive. Change your start-up sequence in BIOS, stick in the CD or USB and cross your fingers. I was able to recover a few files, but the drive is done... So is my lackadaisical writing. Hopefully.
