Carol Burnett Delivers Comedy Again in a New Spin -- With Kids

The inimitable Carol Burnett has a new Netflix show, 'A Little Help with Carol Burnett.' Her little helpers are Pre-K to elementary school age kids and they'll take on topics ranging from technology to love.

The Carol Burnett Show was sensational -- a feel-good success starring one of the most beloved comedians in history. As long ago as the classic show aired, from September 1967 to March 1978, it still stands up today for its originality and creativity.

You can catch the show on MeTV, Amazon, FanTV and YouTube among other platforms. There is still an audience for the show and I think there always will be.

Cast members included the deadpan comic genius Harvey Korman, Carol Burnett look- alike Vicki Lawrence, the stunning Lyle Waggoner and goofy Tim Conway. The Carol Burnett Show was in a sketch format. There was nothing Burnett wouldn’t do to make her audience laugh.

One of my favorite skits was when Burnett played Scarlett O’Hara. I still remember a young Burnett coming down a long staircase wearing a voluminous green dress made out of a window curtain. The gaudy dress came complete with a curtain rod strewn across the actress’s shoulders and a green and yellow tassle that was morphed into a hat. The sketch was titled ‘Went with the Wind.’ It aired on November 13, 1976. We don’t see TV like this anymore.

Burnett has started a new project. She created and will produce a Neflix show called "A Little Help with Carol Burnett." The first show aired May 4. It will be spontaneous; unscripted. The show stars Burnett talking to kids in preschool up to grade school age about topics ranging from technology to the meaning of love.

Russell Peters will be a regular and there will be guest appearances from the likes of Lisa Kudrow, Wanda Sykes, DJ Khaled and more. Twelve episodes have been approved for production. https://www.netflix.com/title/80193475

This show marks Burnett’s return to a serial TV format. It’s been a long time: The Carol Burnett Show celebrated a 50 year anniversary special last year on CBS.  Of course, Burnett has appeared in countless TV movies and films over the years, including a recurring role on Mama’s Family, with Vicky Lawrence, a spin-off of The Carol Burnett Show.

One thing that has remained consistent about Carol Burnett is her ageless and charming persona. Anyone who ever watched her original self-titled show will remember Burnett ending each show playfully tugging on her left ear – homage to a grandmother who raised her. The 85-year-old (hard to believe!) comedienne still tours the country and works audiences with her Q & A format -- so engaging in the classic shows.

And she has it right! What better way to get a fresh and honest perspective than to talk to kids. This was done in Kids Say the Darndest Things (hosted by the now disgraced Bill Cosby), which was based on Art Linkletter’s radio show House Party.

Regarding her new show, Burnett recently said in an interview, “It’s about having fun.” We all need more of that -- in the innocent way that only children deliver.
