California's Wildfires Are On Full Blast

Careless behavior can cause incredible destruction.

Driving around Northern California, you can see how dry the state has become in the last two months. In March, everything was nice, dark green, but within several months everywhere you looked everything that was green had turned brown.

Because of the wet winter, at least compared to the the last three years, the weeds have grown taller then usual. And, with the heat 100-degrees or more in some areas of California, the weeds got dry very quickly. So far this month in June, there has been one major fire in Southern California and hundreds more throughout the state. Fire season has start with a bang.

While sitting at a picnic table writing this article, I can hear and see several fire trucks with their sirens going full blast racing to a fire. Looking up from the fire truck racing down the street, you can see brown smoke coming up from behind a hill. Brown smoke usually indicates a wood or dry grass fire.

Above the smoke and to the left of it, there is a helicopter dropping water. After it dropped the water, the helicopter moved away and an airplane dove towards the smoke and released an orange looking fluid. A few minutes later there was less smoke. Because this fire was hit hard and strong by the state and county fire departments, only two acres of dry grass burned. According to the nightly news reports on T. V, the cause of the fire was a burning cigarette that someone threw out of a car.

Fire season has started. It's time to be extra careful with campfires and observe all safety precautions. Of course, you should never throw cigarettes, lit or otherwise, on to the ground or from a moving vehicle. But this time of year the consequences of doing so could be the cause of immense devastation to the land, destruction of homes and even loss of life.
