Bill Donohue's "Common Sense Catholicism" Challenges Politically Correct Dogma

In under 300 lively pages, Catholic League President Bill Donahue protests today's PC Establishment with the same vigor Luther's ninety-five theses did the Catholic hierarchy of his day. These theses take the form of six chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion--all devoted to direct confrontation with the corrosive ideology of Political Correctness that dominates American society.

The world has indeed turned upside-down when a Catholic sociologist's defense of "common-sense" is a Protestant-style critique of dogmatism, bigotry, obscurantism, and anti-scientific attitudes in America's Politically Correct "Woke" Establishment.

Yet, that is exactly what Catholic League President Bill Donohue does in Common Sense Catholicism: How to Resolve Our Cultural Crisis.

In under 300 lively pages, he protests today's PC Establishment with the same vigor Luther's ninety-five theses did the Catholic hierarchy of his day.

His theses take the form of six chapters, an introduction, and a conclusion--all devoted to his direct confrontation with the corrosive ideology of Political Correctness that dominates American culture.

Instead of offering a political dogma, Donohue argues for the cultivation of moral virtue.

Donahue presents the Catholic Church as defender of ordered liberty against Establishment forces of darkness which promote what Donohue calls "stupidity," instead of common sense (Donahue surely knows that Common Sense was Thomas Paine's title for his pamphlet in defense of the American Revolution).

Chapter Two compares Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's critique of Communism to the Catholic Church's opposition to sexual promiscuity and homosexuality, noting that mass death resulted from both purges following the Communist Revolution and the AIDS epidemic following the Sexual Revolution.

Chapter Three argues human biology contradicts theories of feminism, and that the Catholic Church is actually scientific and less dogmatic than Ivy League academics relying upon feminist cant. Donohue states: "...it is not the Catholic Church that needs a reality check; it is the professoriate."

Likewise, Donohue confronts Marxist economic theories, citing Matthew 26:11 as evidence that the poor will always be with us. Catholicism encourages people to ameliorate poverty, Donohue maintains, while Marxism misleads people into believing that poverty can be eliminated, driving entire societies into destitution as a result.

In one of his most powerful arguments, Donohue chastises "Woke" professors for blaming Christianity for slavery, noting that St. Patrick campaigned against slavery in the Roman Empire, that Christians fought to abolish slavery worldwide, and that it was Christian abolitionism and appeals to natural law--not Marxism--that ended slavery in the United States. "If there were not such an animus against Christianity in higher education, more professors would credit Christianity for making America special," he writes. He might have added the KKK targeted Southern Catholics.

In his final chapter, Donohue defends religion as a shield against tyranny, and the First Amendment as a guarantor of religion in America. He might as well have quoted Martin Luther, as he shares his hostile attitude toward elites.

Luther said: "When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, 'Repent,' he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance."

Likewise, Donohue concludes: "The good news is that the lack of common sense exhibited by blue-sky intellectuals need not be determinative. Cultures have a way of rejuvenating themselves--there is nothing inevitable about the vector of change. It is up to us to challenge the big thinkers and uphold common sense."
