'America's Dad' will be Back in Court By Summer's End to Hear his Sentence After Being Convicted in Criminal Court of Aggravated Indecent Assault
Multiple media sources are talking about 80 year old Bill Cosby’s "fall from grace." What a monumental understatement. He was one of America’s highest paid TV and movie stars – and was just convicted of aggravated indecent assault against Andrea Constand. The 45-year-old former Temple University athletics employee accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2004 at his home. She is one of at least 60 women who charged the actor with inappropriate sexual advances or rape; in some instances drugging them.
It’s a shame that role models like Cosby have to crash into a proverbial concrete wall. Cosby was able to overcome racial bias in television casting with his hit show The Cosby Show and has amassed a fortune estimated at $400 million dollars.
Cosby was born was on July 12, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He dropped out of college to pursue a stand up comedy career. The Cosby Show was developed from the comedian’s stand up routines and his views on family. Cosby played obstetrician Dr. Cliff Huxtable. His attorney wife Claire was played by Felicia Rashad and the couple had a total of five TV children -- Sondra, Denise, Vanessa and Rudy and Theo. The widely popular show aired from September 1984 through April 1992 and earned a whopping 54 awards, including Golden Globe and Emmy nods.
Now, the man who was labeled "America’s Dad" and beloved by so many is facing prison time. His character, Dr. Huxtable, was a class act and always maintained his sense of humor. But humor probably won’t be part of Bill Cosby’s repertoire the day he is sentenced. The guilty verdict came down after a retrial in Norristown, PA on April 26, 2018. Cosby will hear his punishment within the next 3 months. For now, the legally blind octogenarian is on house arrest at his massive estate outside Philadephia.
Legal experts say there is a range of time Cosby could serve. Depending on how charges are interpreted, his sentence could range from 22 months to up to 30 years in prison.
A footnote about the current trial. Bill Cosby has already paid nearly $3.4 million to Andrea Constand. Jurors learned this from a prosecutor. The payoff was the settlement for the 2006 civil case. Cosby’s lawyers argue that Constand was looking for a big pay day but the second jury didn’t see it that way.
Just why a man who was so respected and beloved would throw it all out to commit sexual assault is beyond me or any reasonable person. Perhaps Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer or Kevin Spacey could answer that. Are they all criminally insane or just plain amoral with overblown egos to match? This verdict proves that no one is above the law. Rape and unwanted sexual advances are always illicit.
