Biden's Appointing Kerry as Climate Tsar Is Indispensable

The president-elect's pick will lead to a better environment and a return to smoother foreign relations.

Although President Donald Trump is still challenging the presidential election's results, President-Elect Joe Biden has appointed former secretary of state John Kerry as climate tsar. He will also sit on the National Security Council. The former Obama administration cabinet member pledged to restore the Paris Climate Accord, from which Trump withdrew.

The decision to make him a climate tsar has both energized and riled politicians. Kerry's presence in the Biden Administration garnered both support from both the center and progressive left, with even progressive Alexandria Ocasio Cortez backing the move. However, many conservatives lambasted the appointment, claiming it could lead the Biden Administration to embrace the Green New Deal on climate change. However, Biden's pick will be productive because Kerry has both the political experience and diplomacy skills to improve foreign relations and climate change.

Kerry's appointment will be a stark contrast to the Trump Administration, with its lackadaisical approach to tackling climate change at best. The current administration’s figures who were supposed to combat climate change consisted of former Energy Secretary Rick Perry and Environmental Protection Agency's chief Andrew Wheeler. For officials who were supposed to protect the climate and environment, their priorities were focused elsewhere. Wheeler himself stated climate change wouldn't be his top priority. Wheeler was an ex-coal and uranium lobbyist. Although Perry conceded that humans influenced climate change, he downplayed the issue. He claimed that same year in 2017 that carbon emissions aren’t the main contributor to climate change, claiming ocean waters and the environment are the "primary control knob." The former Energy Secretary's views clash with current climate science, with scientists stating that human-generated greenhouse gas emissions are primarily responsible for climate change.

The former Secretary of State has also proven to be dedicated to tackling climate change and he has proven to be diplomatic. Kerry has not only held talks to address the severity of climate change, but he's linked up with conservatives such as former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich. He launched World War Zero, an organization aiming to fight climate change by holding many "climate conversations" worldwide. Outside of climate change and bipartisan politics, Kerry has cooperated with foreign politicians in dire times. He worked with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to salvage the Iran Nuclear Deal before it was abruptly scrapped by Trump. Kerry also met up with French President Emmanuel Macron and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to (unsuccessfully) preserve the pact. But his determination and readiness to work with foreign leaders epitomizes how a Biden Administration member should be.

The president-elect was wise to appoint Kerry as climate tsar and put him on the National Security Council. Kerry has demonstrated his commitment to cope with the climate crisis, whilst his contemporaries in the Trump Administration have either wavered or downplayed the severity of the issue. The former Secretary of State's diplomacy skills and willingness to work across the aisle will especially benefit the Biden Administration. Kerry will make America Great Again.
