Baby, It's Cold... Go Home Now!

Another one bites the dust. A holiday favorite gets booted from the radio.

Back in 1944, when people had a sense of humor, a songwriter by the name of Frank Loesser wrote, Baby, It's Cold Outside, a fun, flirtatious, song which was featured in a 1949 film by the name of 'Neptune's Daughter.' The song was so popular the film won an Oscar for best original song.

Ahhh...those were the good ol' days, when people could sing to their heart's content about best practices for date rape.

Wait, what?

Oh, sorry, I jumped ahead.

Anyway, with the title saying it's cold outside, and the nature of the lyrics themselves, the listener immediately understands that there's a conversation taking place.  A male and a female singer are talking during the winter, which is why the song is so popular during Christmas time.  The cold also sets the stage for the couple playfully arguing about spending more time together.

So, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. Well, a small controversy started when a radio station in Cleveland called WDOK, decided the song was offensive, removing it from their yule-tide playlist. The station's host explained that he was taking the #MeToo movement into consideration.

"I do realize that when the song was written in 1944, it was a different time, but now while reading it, it seems very manipulative and wrong," host Glenn Anderson wrote on the station's website. "The world we live in is extra sensitive now, and people get easily offended, but in a world where #MeToo has finally given women the voice they deserve, the song has no place."

Now, I must admit, when I first read about his reason for removing the song, my initial reaction was, 'Wow, what a sensitive dude. I mean, he's totally ridiculous of course, but in a sensitive way.'

Look, I get it. I'm not against the #MeToo movement at all. Glenn Anderson is not wrong when he says that women are finally getting their voice, but there's such a thing as being overly-ridiculous, er, I mean, overly-sensitive. So, in this case, he's just wrong. You can see how wrong by his own statement. He says, 'but now while reading it, it seems....' The fact that he's reading the lyrics, and basing his decision on this, is interesting to me.

When you read something it's in your own voice, like you're doing right now. (You're probably like, hey man, don't freak me out, I get it, I get it!) Anyway, if you read the lyrics I'm sure it'll be a much different experience than listening to the song, or even seeing it in the movie. Our world is colored by our experiences, which is why it's important to take into consideration the context and meaning of the song the way it was intended.

With that in mind, I wonder what he thinks about the Elf version of this song?  He probably hates it and he wants it banned.  That's a shame.  Especially because Buddy is sensitive and well-behaved.
