Authors and Their Books Are Taken for Granted

Some people may take books for granted and don't realize the time and effort that goes into making them. Also, they may think it's easy to write a book when that's not the case.

To some, creative writing may seem easy. It seems that all you have to do is have a good imagination and the ability to write well. However, this is far from the truth. There is a lot more behind-the-scenes work when it comes to writing a novel.

This process requires patience, persistence and courage among many other things. While courage may seem out of place in this short list, it is probably one of the most important features a writer must have. As one of my creative writing professor’s once put it, “It takes courage to write, and it takes courage to share that writing.”

Many people think that very little research is involved in the process of writing a novel, and I wish that was the case. I am currently in the process of writing my first novel, and I own 11 books to aid me through the process. Even with all these books, I still find myself visiting Google multiple times to figure out how to make a scene more believable. I can also tell you that my Google search history has all sorts of weird questions that someone might find concerning if they didn’t know I was a writer. Just the other day, I had to look up “Can a katana cut through bone?”

After years of writing followed by going back and revising, authors must face what very well might be described as the wrath of publishing companies. Persistence and a strong mindset are essential at this stage since a lot of rejection letters will be sent. Let me just say that more often than not, these letters are harsh. Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, was told by publisher James T. Fields, “Stick to your teaching, Miss Alcott. You can’t write.”

Some people often have the preconceived notion that if you have a good imagination and can write well, you can crank out a book in no time. As much as I wish this were true, this is hardly the case. Authors put their sweat and tears into their creations for years and need to have a strong mindset in order to face the numerous rejections from publishers. Hours of typing away at a computer or typewriter often result in carpal tunnel syndrome in many writers. Even starting to write a novel can be one of the most challenging tasks for a writer.

Authors, especially those who write fiction, create worlds and people you have never seen or met before. These worlds and characters become familiar to us and often feel real. We don’t always realize how much work is put into these creations and sometimes take them for granted. Next time you pick up a book to read, I encourage you to remind yourself of the long process the author went through to publish the book.
