Army of the Dead: Promising Reviews Online isn't as Accurate as it Looks

Army of the Dead really looked like it could've been an exciting zombie/heist film, but it turned out to be a movie with many flaws.

Zack Snyder has directed some successful action films from Dawn of the Dead (2004 Version) to 300. Even with his success, he has blundered many films he has produced and directed in the past couple of years.

His latest Netflix Production, Army of the Dead is arguably another example of this. The film stars former WWE star Dave Bautista and centers around a group of mercenaries who take part in a heist to steal millions from a casino in a desolate, zombie-infected Las Vegas.

Reading the reviews of the film; it seemed to have been well-perceived from reputable movie sites and some comments on Google reviews seemed promising. The film also presented a unique zombie theme with an almost identical Ocean’s franchise feel that convinced me it could be at least a decent experience.

Ironically, after watching the two and a half hour film, Army of the Dead turned out to be the complete opposite of the positive reviews online. While I appreciate the effort from Snyder and the overall concept he tries to display, it fails to live up to the hype some of these critics led people like me to believe.

Again the movie was too long and  really could’ve been cut to maybe an hour and a half run time instead. The first 30 minutes of the film arguably wasted so much precious time with mediocre character introduction scenes and drastically slowed the pace of the film which made an impact in being easily engaged to the film.

Even when the film starts to move into the central storyline, the script stalls the story with many poorly executed scenes and there are  many events throughout the whole film that don’t make the most sense. An example of this is characters making many poor decisions during their main mission to steal money that made them surviving and getting out safety from the erratic murdering zombies much more difficult.

Many of the characters were also not well-developed to mitigate the poor story and it’s seen with the on-screen chemistry between the many actors of each role. Most of the characters didn’t have that ability to connect to  each other, except maybe a select few, and were similarly like the one-dimensional characters you always see in other movies.

All in all, Army of the Dead is another example of a great idea from producers that fails to execute its vision correctly. There are some good choreographed action sequences and Snyder had the right idea; he just couldn’t hide the clear deficiencies of the film and make it into a nice balanced movie.
