AO-C Starting to Believe Her Own Hype

The freshman congresswoman is a disturbing combination of ignorance and arrogance.
Anyone hoping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would become more sober (read: less rainbows and unicorns-like in her governing philosophy) upon assuming office as the representative for New York’s 14th congressional district in Congress has been sorely disappointed. Given recent policy pronouncements by AO-C, it seems she is immune to reality. Worse yet, fame is starting to go to her head.
AO-C has a degree in economics (and international relations) from Boston University, but you wouldn’t know that from the way she helped chase away Amazon and the 25,000 jobs the company planned to bring with a second headquarters in New York City. The deal was expected to provide $30 billion in tax revenue after nearly $3 billion in promised tax breaks lured one of the world’s richest, most powerful companies to the Big Apple.
“If we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves, if we wanted to,” Alex from the block said in a stunning display of financial illiteracy. “We could hire out more teachers. We can fix our subways. We can put a lot of people to work for that money, if we wanted to.”
No, they couldn’t, because the $3 billion represented future tax breaks, not a large pile of cash to be spent elsewhere. Boston University might want to consider revoking AO-C’s degree.
Of course, what else would one expect from someone who put forth the ridiculous “Green New Deal,” with its call to eliminate air travel in favor of high-speed rail (goodbye Hawaiian vacation), the eradication of farting cows and the provision of money to people unwilling to work?
AO-C is clearly not a threat to Albert Einstein’s reputation, but that hasn’t stopped her from talking down to those who correctly criticize her loopy policy prescriptions.
Responding to those who take issue with the "Green New Deal," AO-C had this to say at a recent town hall event: “So people are like, ‘Oh, it’s unrealistic. Oh, it’s vague. Oh, it doesn’t address this minute little thing.’ And I’m like, ‘You try. You do it. Cuz you’re not. Cuz you’re not. So, until you do it, I’m the boss. How about that?’”
Of course, she also basically told people who don’t like the “Green New Deal” to sit down and shut up in a tweet that went like this:
Apparently AO-C’s college education at Boston University didn’t include reading James Madison’s discussion of preventing majority rule as laid out in “Federalist No. 10.” Or maybe she missed class that day.
So far, after only a few months on the job, AO-C has proven herself to be a fusion of idiocy and pretension when it comes to public policy. Perhaps with age will come wisdom for the 29-year-old. Until then, one is reminded of the saying about youth being wasted on the young.
