Another Race Controversy to Start 2021

As 2020 concluded, America's commitment to improving race relations is apprently not part of its New Year's resolutions as a woman accuses a black teenager of stealing her iPhone at Manhattan's Arlo hotel.

The hope for race relations to cool down across America after what was a very tumultuous 2020 and prior years hit a wall as another incident of a white person foolishly over-reacting to something a black person did or didn't do has made national headlines.

This most recent incident took place last Saturday in New York City — Lower Manhattan inside the lobby of a hotel called The Arlo. In this lobby, a white woman began to carry on about a missing cell phone; she asked to see surveillance footage, asked other people in the lobby to empty their pockets, and then spotted what she thought was an iPhone in the back pocket of Keyon Harrold Jr. she centered her accusations on him. The woman brought out hotel management, insisted the boy let her see his phone, and the boy's father, a Grammy-winning jazz-musician told his son he did not have to respond to her demands.

The accusation is caught on video. The video shows the woman persistently declaring "Show me the proof," about the phone being his own, the hotel manager asking the father to have the boy show everyone whose phone it really was on behalf of the woman, and towards the end of the video, the father suggests the woman use a phone location app like "Find My iPhone." The two begin to walk, and the woman insists the boy cannot leave. She then rushes towards the father and son, is seen on the floor, and then gets back up to run towards the two where all you hear is the father saying "get your hands off ... " and then the video cuts out.

This video does not result in the serious injury of or the death of an African American individual, but the repercussions of it are sure to have the same level of gravity as those who were killed, such as Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, and Breonna Taylor. The incident was alarming enough to have the mayor, Bill de Blasio, weigh in and declare it an act of " ...  racism. Plain and simple."

Never mind the racial-profiling aspect of things; why can't our approach be a little more gentle? Had she explained her situation to everyone in the lobby, people are likely to help. They could have collectively put their heads together to find the device. In many cases, individuals will help you trace your steps, check in areas you did not check, and give you ideas on what you can do to find a lost item.

This latest bit of uncivilized, baseless accusations against Harrold Jr. are reflections of the insecurity felt when around black individuals. As it turns out here, the phone showed up with the driver from the Uber the woman took to the hotel! This verifies notions African Americans declare about being followed around stores for shoplifting or other accusations of suspicious behavior.

In any event, 2021 isn't off to a racially harmonious start for America.
