Ann Coulter's "Resistance is Futile!" -- The Media Laid Bare

Resistance is Futile! is not a screed, but rather a carefully documented study of media duplicities and double-standards, written with humor and panache.

Ann Coulter’s latest book, Resistance is Futile! How the Trump-Hating Left Lost Its Collective Mind, is not really about the “Trump-Hating Left.” It’s focused on the Trump-Hating Press and does an outstanding job showing the problem of “Fake News” is far worse than bias. The book is not a screed, but rather a carefully documented study of media duplicities and double-standards, written with humor and panache.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Coulter declares candidate Donald J. Trump’s secret weapon in 2016 was not Russian support—it was rallies!

Trump “didn’t really have a campaign,” she says, so was winging it.  His only plan was to “fly all over the country giving stem-winder speeches to ten-thousand-person crowds every day for eighteen months.” Bottom line: “Trump’s devious strategy was to propose ideas that were widely popular.”

The section headed “PLEASE DISREGARD EVERYTHING WE’VE SAID FOR THE PAST TEN MONTHS ABOUT THE DOSSIER,” details how ten months of erroneous reports about who funded the Fusion GPS dossier, which appeared everywhere from Buzzfeed to The New York Times, were dropped instantly after they were exposed as false—but little effort was made to correct the record by reporting that the Clinton campaign had paid for it.

This pattern of deliberate smear, followed by exposure, followed by silence, is revealed by Coulter as a paradigmatic strategy.

Likewise, she makes a solid legal argument for why President Clinton’s proven perjury and subordination of perjury were obstruction of justice, while President Trump’s firing of James Comey was not—because President Trump was not under investigation. No investigation, no obstruction.

Coulter is singularly unafraid to confront the issue of the 2017 Charlottesville riots. President Trump has “condemned ‘neo-Nazis’ and the Klan until he’s blue in the face,” but the press lied about his response because he condemned both sides for violence rather than submit to the media’s willful one-sidedness.

However, Coulter believes Trump’s initial statement has stood the test of time, since leftist violence and intimidation  subsequently spread nationwide to campuses (and elsewhere):

“At college campuses around the country, those noble ‘anti-fascists,’ championed by Romney and Rubio, have continued their violent attacks on conservative speakers—even ACLU members, liberal biology professors, and law professors who happen to believe in free speech…Everyone calls them heroes. Everyone except Donald Trump.”

So, it turns out Charlottesville wasn’t about Nazism, it was about power--media power.

Resistance is Futile! actually concludes the on a more mixed note. Coulter criticizes Trump’s “torpor” in the face of opponents, yet hopes he’ll rise to the occasion in order to end up on Mount Rushmore. However, there may not be much Pres. Trump can do without solid GOP support.  So, while an excellent media analysis, Resistance is Futile!  doesn’t quite fully explain the reason for enduring Republican hostility to a Republican President, the only “Resistance” that really matters, in my opinion.

Maybe she could do that for a 14th New York Times bestseller?
