And Then There Was One

This week in sports, the screaming headlines were made by the Ravens. Going into the weekend, there were two undefeated teams in the NFL. Then, (as I predicted) the Ravens finally knocked the Patriots off their pedestal. I also believe that the 49ers will not "run the table", because they are about to face a super-tough stretch of the schedule. It has been a good run — but what does the NFL stand for? “Not For Long.”

Ever since Week One, I felt that the Patriots were going to dominate their division, but were not going to go undefeated. However, their early-season schedule was packed with relatively-weak opponents (not counting the Bills, who nearly took them out in their first meeting). So I picked them to win over and over.  That streak ended Sunday.

I also think that the 49ers (while a surprisingly strong team) benefited from a relatively soft first-half schedule. Predictions are a lot of fun, and (in an admittedly high-odds bet), I predict that the 49ers will also lose their undefeated status (but perhaps not this weekend). My reasoning is that the Niners are now about to run a formidable gauntlet: they face not only the Seahawks (twice), but also the Packers, Ravens, Saints and Rams.

Speaking of predictions, if the Cowboys beat the Giants Monday night, my picks for the weekend will have gone 10-4 — a strong showing for the second week in a row.

The Ravens’ big win was far from the only Sunday excitement. In a drama-filled weekend, the Steelers corralled the Colts’, while the Texans shot down the Jaguars in London to take over the lead in the tough AFC South. Elsewhere, the Chargers shocked the Packers, and the Raiders caged the Lions (who missed a rare opportunity to gain on their three division rivals).

As I expected, the first marquee match of the weekend was the Vikings challenging the Chiefs (sans Patrick Mahomes).  In a close, exciting match, both defenses dominated. But a few plays (and a referee call) near the end tipped it in favor of the Chiefs, who are now being chased by the upstart Chargers and Raiders in the AFC West.

Looking ahead, Week Ten has several intriguing showdowns, starting with those surprising Raiders and Chargers meeting on Thursday Night Football. On Sunday, the Panthers visit the Packers, the Rams take on the Steelers, and the Cowboys host the Vikings on Sunday Night Football.

Then, in the best Monday Night Football game so far this season, the Seahawks will get their first crack at the undefeated 49ers.

Here are all the Week Ten matches — and my picks:
