An Old Timers Day Baseball Game

I had a wonderful time attending the NY Mets Old Timers Day game and festivities!

I love baseball, major and minor league, and my favorite team is the New York Mets. I do like the Yankees and root for them, but the Mets are my first love. I have followed their ups and downs since I was a small child.

The Mets have had their awful seasons and some amazing ones as well. In 2022 they have been doing quite well and have been in first place in the National League East for a while.

When my longtime friend Sherryl asked me if I would join her at this year's Old Timers Day, I jumped at the chance. I'd never attended Old Timers Day before! She got the tickets from her brother, who had gone on vacation.

The festivities began with a few dozen former Mets players being introduced on the field, one by one, by Mets radio announcer Howie Rose. Among those who attended were players from the 1969 World Series winning teams such as Cleon Jones, Ron Swoboda, Ed Kranepool, and Art Shamsky; from the championship 1986 team, Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry, Ray Knight, Jesse Orosco, Sid Fernandez, Keith Hernandez, and others. There were many more, including pitcher Jay Hook from the very first season.

Other players who have died were represented by family members, such as Tommie Agee and the recent Hall of Fame inductee Gil Hodges.

Several of the retired Mets players played an abbreviated fun game, the Amazins versus the Miracles (these are two nicknames the team has had over the years). I was surprised to see several of these men could still hit the ball, but their running and fielding capabilities were rusty. Still, it was fun.

And the super surprise of the day was that the legendary Willie Mays had his number retired in a ceremony! Now no other Mets player will wear #24. Mays is 91, so his son attended the ceremony in his place.

After the festivities, there was a break, and then the actual game took place between the current Mets team and the Colorado Rockies. The Mets won 3-0, and it was an exciting game.

It was also extra fun for me because I met up with my friends Max and Phil. And at one point, I realized that a woman in our row was a teacher I'd known ten years ago when I taught at a particular Brooklyn public high school. It was really nice to chat with Jenn again.

It was a long day, and Sherryl and I commuted to and from Citifield via subway trains, and these were not short rides. But overall, it was such an enjoyable day for me. It was a special treat for someone like me, who is a passionate fan of the sport and the team. I wore one of my Mets t-shirts, one of my Mets baseball caps, and a beaded necklace for the occasion.

And it was also extra fun to be surrounded by so many fans!

Let's Go Mets!
