America and the West Risk Disaster by Enabling China

The increasingly powerful and belligerent Middle Kingdom that unleashed COVID-19 on the world continues to be coddled by the international community.

WWE wrestler-turned-actor John Cena recently made headlines by doing the job to the Chinese government via a groveling apology for the sin of acknowledging Taiwanese independence. China’s authoritarian rulers, of course, regard Taiwan as a renegade province. Cena was likely motivated to say sorry by financial concerns shared by Universal, the studio behind the “F9” movie the muscle-bound thespian was promoting when he told a Taiwanese interviewer offhandedly Taiwan would be “the first country to watch the film.” After all, imperiling the film’s release in mainland China could mean the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars.

Therein lies the rub. U.S. business interests, among others, are inextricably intertwined with China and its massive market.  So much so that it’s becoming increasingly common to see prominent Americans and the iconic brands they represent essentially betray Western values by selling out to the communist Chinese for the almighty dollar. It was only a few short years ago that superstar player LeBron James and the NBA caved to China over then-Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey tweeting support for pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

Corporate America in the thrall of China, however, pales in comparison to the U.S. government’s policy of non-confrontation. President Biden had to be shamed into ordering a closer review of the origins of COVID-19 — after cancelling a similar probe undertaken by the Trump administration — now that mounting circumstantial evidence indicates the virus may have escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China. To be sure, it’s the right move to scrutinize that possibility. However, given Biden’s predilection for being soft on China — candidate Biden downplayed the China threat — it strains credulity to believe his administration is striving to find hard evidence that would put the entire Western world in position to blame Chinese incompetence for killing more than 3 million people.

Red flags abound. Nevertheless, a world weary of battling a virus out of China turns a blind eye to the new evil empire (possible genocidal abuse of its Muslim Uyghurs) from whence the plague came. Evidence converges on the inescapable fact the Chinese government seeks nothing less than to upend the American-led international system on its way to global supremacy. Economic espionage and the theft of intellectual property and military secrets are par for the course for the Chinese government. What was once the free, financially-vibrant, pro-Western Chinese enclave of Hong Kong now wilts with Beijing’s boot on its throat. Hong Kong’s new masters — with their increasing military power — now cast a conqueror’s eye toward Taiwan, while laboring to turn the South China Sea and its vital shipping lanes into a Sino lake.

Unlike the supine John Cena, America and the West should not lay down for the Red Dragon. America should be leading the world in isolating China on all fronts: economically, diplomatically and militarily. We continue incentivizing China’s bad behavior at our peril.
