A Writer's Slump

I'm always struggling to write, but I may finally be at the end of this slump.

Writing has been and always will be a struggle for me. I love reading and reading books about the writing process and listening to the authors give advice and tips, but when it comes down to actually writing, I'm stuck. When I was younger, I always had story ideas buzzing around in my brain, but that buzzing seems to have completely disappeared as I've aged.

Back in April and May, I was really chugging along. I was working on the novel version of a screenplay that a family member had recently finished. He had suggested I write the novel version and I jumped on the idea. It felt like the ideal situation for me; I could write a novel without having to actually come up with the story myself? Perfect! While I did enjoy this for a while, and I feel hopeful that I will eventually be able to finish it, I lost passion and interest in writing a story that wasn't mine.

It was difficult to flesh out characters, imagery, and plot points when they didn't originate in my own brain. I love the screenplay that my family member wrote and I feel that it has the potential to be a wonderful novel, but I began to crave a story that belonged to me.

I had a story idea for a while now that I had come up with two years ago while taking an online writing class. All I had was the first page, though. I didn't have a plot, or even characters fully figured out, but I had the feeling. I knew what type of story I wanted it to be; sinister and dark, while not being "horror" or anything close to it. I wanted some coming-of-age themes and a young protagonist. I wanted there to be a twist, but not be a full-on mystery story.

In the shower the other day, I had an idea, the first idea I've had about this story in months. I went to my computer that night and started taking notes. My boyfriend sat with me and we bounced ideas off each other.

Slowly, something is beginning to take shape in my mind and I can't wait to get it all on paper.
