A Southerner Abroad in North Macedonia: Part Two

With the conclusion of my second week in Macedonia on Sunday, I wanted to reflect back on the things I've experienced.

My time in North Macedonia has been anything but disappointing. I'm honestly having the time of my life and I've met great people! I haven't known these people for long but it feels like I've known some of them for a lifetime. They're so easy to talk to and get along with and I honestly can't imagine not talking to them even when I'm back in the states. These are the kind of people who would still keep in touch no matter the distance or time difference. I will be forever grateful to my friend for introducing them to me.

This past week we have done many things. But something that stood out to me was visiting the Old Bazaar. If any of you reading this are interested in visiting Macedonia, then you have to check out the Old Bazaar. It's a series of shops and a few places to eat and drink. When I arrived the first thing I noticed was that even on the cobblestone streets, people are driving Vespas and bikes and motorized scooters! That was crazy to me because the streets are so small there and people are walking everywhere. But it's absolutely beautiful there. I wish I could attach a picture just to show how beautiful it truly is.

One thing I've decided to do differently while I'm here is to not buy touristy things. Yes, I bought a shot glass for my grandmother and one for me, but other than that, I've wanted to buy things that I can wear all the time. Something where when I wear it and someone asks me where I got it, I can say "Oh! I got that in Macedonia!" So I did just that. I bought a tree of life necklace to match my ring. It's not a big flashy necklace but rather a small minimalist one. I'm so happy with it, it fits me perfectly.

Another thing I decided to do was to bring disposable cameras. Old fashioned I know, but here's why I did it. When using disposable cameras, you get the surprise of seeing your photos after they are developed. I find that I have completely forgotten what I have taken pictures of with them. But that's what makes it exciting! I get to be surprised! Yes, I don't get the instant gratification of seeing my photos the minute I take them, but I think that's what makes it the most fun.

Every day here is a new adventure and that's all I could ask for. My next adventure you might ask? Greece! It's time to go live my Mamma Mia dreams of dancing and singing ABBA in the streets and beaches of Greece! 10 year old me is jumping up and down at this opportunity.
