A Review of 'Framing Britney Spears'

As a life-long Britney fan, it was truly heartbreaking to watch such a vibrant, beautiful, and creative woman get stripped of her rights and become a prisoner at the hands of her father.
By the end of Framing Britney Spears, I was left speechless and utterly devastated by the events that led the famous pop singer to where she is now. The eye-opening documentary reveals how the young girl from McComb, Mississippi became a star and the downfalls that led her into conservatorship with her father, Jamie Spears.
I became informed of the conservatorship when the Free Britney Movement went viral in the summer of 2020. I was disturbed to find out that Jamie Spears and co-conservator Andrew Wallet had full authority over Britney's life for the last twelve years. The conservatorship put the two men in charge of her finances, career decisions and gave them the right to restrict her from where she went and who she spoke to.
During the documentary, I kept asking myself: "Why is a thirty-nine-year-old, who is more than capable of making decisions, still required to have someone delegate what happens in her life?" As I continued watching the documentary, it became hauntingly clear that Britney's conservators were using this as a tool to profit off her.
The conservatorship went into effect when Britney began experiencing a series of meltdowns after divorcing Kevin Federline and losing custody of her two children. The most popular was when she took an umbrella to a paparazzi's car in 2007. Many people thought the singer was on the brink of insanity. To me, it looked like a desperate cry for help. After years of being harassed by the paparazzi and scrutinized by society, she just wanted to be left alone.
Shortly after the 2007 incidents, the Los Angeles Supreme Court ruled that Jamie Spears, who was absent for most of the singer's career, and Andrew Wallet would have full control over Britney in a conservatorship. Britney understood the rules of the conservatorship and only asked for one request. She wanted a bank to take control of her finances and not her dad. She also made it explicit that she would not make music if her father is in control.
Conservatorships are put into place when a person cannot mentally or physically make decisions on their own regarding their daily lives and finances. If Britney understood what conservatorship was, demanded that a bank take over her finances, and stated she would not make music if her father was in charge, how did that not prove she was a competent human being? It makes me believe her freedom should never have been in jeopardy.
I do not think Britney deserves to endure this abuse of power anymore. I hope this documentary lets people see Britney in a new light, and one day she finally gets the justice she has always deserved. #FreeBritney
