A Parent-Teacher Meeting

School chooses to have a panel instead of a simple meeting between teachers and parent. Is this what society has forced us into?

I have a meeting later today with two of my son's teachers; they are his AP Research teachers who co-teach the class. He's not doing so well in it despite a ton of effort I see being put in. Not doing well as in they aren't giving him any credit for his work at all.

As a parent, it's frustrating when you see the work being put in and you can't understand what the real issue is. Upon finding out that an entire quarter of extra work with a kid who otherwise got straight As led to another F, I requested a meeting. After all, I am a concerned parent.

What's odd is the teacher didn't even say two words in her email response before she brought in the counselor and vice-principal. This has me concerned. Are they afraid I'm a troublemaker? I haven't really been involved in his high school career so I don't know where they would get that idea. Of course, I want answers and intend to advocate for my son since I've read the work and feel that there is some credit due above a flat out F.

My feeling is that schools, in general, have adopted a meeting-by-panel policy because parents do go in unhinged, often just mad at the result and not wanting to find a reason or a solution moving forward.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm upset at how it appears my son is being treated. But I'll also be the first to say that is why I requested a meeting - to set the record straight on both sides. It's a bit intimidating to me to need to walk into a panel that knows each other and is likely aligned (not with me). It's unfortunate that we can't just meet, teachers to parent, and see what happens.

Aren't we the adults, supposedly?
