“A. I.” -- the Democrats' Mantra in 2019

What the Speaker-in-Waiting, Nancy Pelosi, should do in her first week of the new term.

Over the past week, I have been thinking a lot about “A. I.”  No, not that A. I. – artificial intelligence – although I wish this White House had some (artificial or otherwise). No, the A. I. I’ve been thinking about deals with what the Speaker-in-Waiting, Nancy Pelosi, should do her first week of the new term.

First, the “A”: Agenda. The Speaker should bring to the floor of the House a Democratic agenda to show the American people what America might look like under Democratic leadership. I would lead with infrastructure. Get a bill to the floor, pass it, and move it on up. It is irrelevant what the Senate does with it.  If Mitch McConnell wants to quash it, so be it. No longer could it be said that the Dems were being obstructionist.

Next, bring forward a bill on DACA. Use the “deal” that Trump agreed to when he invited Nancy and Chuck to the Oval Office to the horror of Paul and Mitch. Pass the bill and let the Senate have that stain on their hands in 2020 when McConnell ignores it.

Finally, tax reform. This one’s a bit tougher but the Dems could show what a middle class tax cut really looks like. I know it will never pass in the Senate, but who cares? The Red/Blue contrast will be as stark as ever.

So let’s turn to the “I”: Investigate. On January 3, Devin Nunes and Trey Gowdy will be emasculated. Now we can turn to Adam Schiff (did I spell that right, Mr. President?) and Jerry Nadler for consideration of the ethical behavior, or lack thereof, of this White House and the Cabinet. For starters, in the first week I would subpoena the EPA (let’s look at Scott Pruitt’s spending abuses and his relationships with lobbyists), and the Commerce Department (check out Wilbur Ross maintaining his investments although he has been told to divest, making tens of millions of dollars in the process). Bring these guys up to Capitol Hill for some open hearings so that they can tell the American people exactly how the swamp is being drained. There’s plenty more to go, but the Executive Branch seems a bit short-handed at the moment, so let’s not pile on.

I know what you're thinking. You thought the “I” was going to be impeachment.  Not a chance. The Democrats need to stay as far away from that one as possible. It should only be considered if the Republicans start talking about, and perhaps after Mr. Mueller and the SDNY get through with Trump, the R’s will have no choice but to act. But that should not be a Democratic issue as we move to 2019.

What do you say, Madam Speaker? Can you rally the troops to bring sanity to America, or is the discourse simply going to corrode even further? A.I. is all the rage – this should be the Democrats’ mantra as January 3 rolls around. Happy new year!
