We've adopted a kitty!

Now that I’ve come to terms with the fact that I will be working from home and that my boyfriend will continue going to school online for the foreseeable future, we’ve made the decision to adopt a cat. We have been talking about it for months! We both love animals and have dreamed of adopting a dog for years, but don’t feel like we have a large enough space to comfortably house a dog.

We began looking at cats on PetFinder.com and pretty quickly found a young female cat with a beautiful pattern of grey and black fur named Jess. We contacted the adoption organization and filled out an adoption application. Only a day later, we were on the phone with the woman who owns the shelter and she was describing to us what seemed to be a perfect cat.

A young woman who lived about 20 minutes away from us was fostering Jess, so the following day we took a drive out there to meet her. She was smaller than we expected, but a beautiful and friendly animal. We found out that the woman was moving to a new apartment at the end of the week and that she would want the cat to be adopted prior to the move. We went to Petco that day and spent about $200 on food, litter, toys, and more.

A day later, it was time to pick up our sweet new kitty. We drove her home and brought her into our walk-in closet to get acclimated to the new environment. We had read that when cats are brought to a new home, they are often very anxious for the first few days. We did not have this experience! Jess immediately wanted to leave the closet and explore our apartment. We followed her through our small one-bedroom place, showed her where her scratching post was, and put some food and water in her bowls.

We’ve had her for less than a week now, and we’re so happy to have an animal in our home. She is cute, a little crazy, and occasionally wakes us up in the middle of the night by jumping on our bed, but we’re so happy with our decision.

Mental-health wise, this pandemic and isolation have been pretty rough on me. I struggle with anxiety and panic attacks, and I believe that our new addition to the home will help bring us both some much-needed comfort. Now, we just need to figure out a way to make sure she stops pouncing on our feet at three o’clock in the morning!

Oh, and we’ve renamed her: Elaine, or Lainey for short, as a nod to my favorite "Seinfeld" character.
