A Bed Bug Odyssey

If you have never had the experience of finding bed bugs in your home, consider yourself extremely fortunate. We wish that our lives might have been the same. This is a true story that I needed to share.

What I am writing here is a true story, and something tells me that you may have found yourself in a similar situation.

Several years ago bed bugs were found in our apartment, and as we live in a senior citizen building where one calls the office with their problems, we called. Both my husband and I had never before run into a bed bug. However, these unpleasant creatures feed off of human blood, and tend to multiply rapidly.

Shortly after we made the call, a young man, accompanied by a bug sniffing dog, came to check out our place, and neither of us felt happy to hear that there was no simple way to get rid of this scourge. Thus we would have to vacate our apartment in order that the exterminators bring in their equipment and heat out any bed bugs who had taken up residence in our lives.

Had this been the entire story, I would not be writing these words. Unfortunately, it was only the beginning of an experience that no two human beings should have to face.

After the first treatment was completed, we felt secure that we would never see another bed bug, but we were wrong, very wrong, and for some unanswerable reason, the first extermination was only a precursor of what lay ahead for us.

A few months later, we discovered that the first attempt at ridding our home of these unfriendly creatures had been a failure. When we again were attacked by this prolific crew, it shocked us terribly. Now what were we to do? Naturally, the answer didn't change. We were forced to leave our apartment for an entire day while the bug people did their job, necessitating that we stay at a nearby casino overnight, and disrupting our lives yet another time, although we had purchased bed bug covers for our mattresses.

The saga doesn't end there, as we were "attacked" two more times, even when the management had changed companies to rid the apartments of bed bugs that were found there. All that came of it was that we were forced to throw away our beds and chairs. So beyond the financial upset we were faced with, our lives were disrupted again. This time we were somewhat more fortunate, as the exterminating company was prepared to pay for our stay at another casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

Upon returning home, my husband and I were certain that this had to be the end of our bed bug horror story. But unfortunately, we were mistaken, and so the final page of this unbelievable odyssey remained unwritten.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to stay at another casino. This time our bookcases and desk, under which these buggers love living, will be moved first. This was the one thing the bug exterminators had missed. I pray that it produces the end of this story. If not, I feel sure we will both go bugs!
