Fabienne Kabou, 39, of Paris, left her 15-month old baby to die at sea in November of 2013. Kabou is now on trial this week, and has admitted to the abandonment and murder of her own child.

Fabienne Kabou, a French woman and former mother, is on trial this week for allegedly murduring her 15-month-old daughter, Adelaide, in 2013.

Kabou had traveled to Berck-sur-Mer, a costal town in France, and left her baby at the shoreline, allowing the tides to take her away. Allegedly, Kabou had asked locals about the tides beforehand, and when a fisherman found Adelaide's body, Kabou was already on her way home to Paris.

On Monday, Kabou admitted to conciously killing her daughter, expressing that it had been "easier that way." Furthermore, she confessed to feeling as though evil forces and voices had pushed her to kill her baby.

Kabou's ideology behind abandoning her daughter at sea was that she believed the ocean to be "like amniotic fluid." Reports say that the father of Adelaide was unhappy with the unexpected pregnancy, and in turn, that this may have led to a deep depression for Kabou.

The actual birth of the baby girl had never been officially registered, therefore, Adelaide technically did not exist. Nonetheless, according to Kabou, she believed her daughter to be in danger, and that she had to do something about it.

Today, Kabou blames "witchcraft" and delusions as being the cause of this tragedy. When the woman's lawyer, Fabienne Roy-Nansion asked her to explain what had happened, she replied with, "For many years I struggled to wake up in the morning. My feet were paralyzed. I had hallucinations, like seeing the walls that wouldn’t stop shaking.”

If convicted, Kabou will spend life in prison for committing a premeditated murder. Although Kabou has shown signs of being both delusional and depressed, premeditated murder is a serious crime, and I don't believe she should be granted an insanity plea. She has been deemed fit for trial.

What do you think? Had a mental disease/disorder cause this woman to do the unthinkable? Or is the big picture being pushed under the rug? Does Fabienne Kabou deserve a life sentence in prison?
