A Farewell for a Prince

The late Prince Philip of the U.K. was given a king's farewell on Saturday.

Prince Philip passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Windsor Castle. The funeral for the Prince, 99, the husband of Queen Elizabeth for almost 73 years, was held this Saturday at St. George's Chapel in London. Due to Covid restrictions, the Duke of Edinburgh had a 'no fuss funeral' that he requested and just 30, mostly family, were in attendance. His body was transported to the Church on a Range Rover he helped design.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip had the longest marriage in royal history. He was her consort and provided endless comfort and support to the Queen. Although he was entitled to a state funeral, Prince Philip specifically said he did not want one. Instead, he chose a military funeral.

Among the mourners were the Prince's grandson, Prince Harry, who flew over from California without his pregnant wife Meghan and son Archie. Harry was criticized for an interview he recently did with his wife and Oprah Winfrey about possible racism and dismissal of his wife's calls for mental health treatment within the monarchy institution while they were acting senior members of the Royal Family.

The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, the oldest son of the Queen, somberly led the procession behind his father's casket. Three other siblings, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Prince Andrew walked with him. The pageantry was in line with English tradition -- pomp and circumstance the Brits do brilliantly.

The nearly 95-year-old Queen Elizabeth sat quietly by herself in a pew -- a strong presence who maintained a poignant dignity.

Prince Philip was born in 1921, a prince of Greece and Denmark. He met Elizabeth when she was just 13 and he was an 18-year-old cadet. The Prince dedicated his life to serving the British people after he married the young princess, who became Queen of England five years later. He gave up his royal and naval titles to become a British subject in 1947. He was at Elizabeth's side attending multiple events until his retirement in 2017. Prince Philip dedicated himself to charitable causes his whole life but mostly, he was dedicated to his wife and family.

In an Instagram post, Queen Elizabeth wrote of her late husband, "He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years."

The Prince could be included in the 'greatest generation' that Tom Brokaw wrote about in his popular 1998 bestseller. Prince Philip was a naval hero who exhibited traits of commitment, self-sacrifice, and work ethic. There are too few left.

In spite of his dedication to his family, both the Queen and Prince experienced their share of disappointment in their children, no doubt, when various scandals came out. Yet Prince Philip's lifelong service and loyalty to his country, wife, and family will always be remembered, first and foremost. May he rest in peace.
