Gatekeepers, Technology and Freedom
In a nearby mountain range are the remains of countless ancient villages, going back to the earliest ancestors of man. All are found near clefts or openings in the range, where animal herds would pass on their search for fresh pasture. Here predators, humans and animal, would ambush their prey. Business models over centuries lauded the value of control, of exclusive access to a product or a market. Not for long.

Bengals Versus Eagles
The NFL Divisional playoffs were testimony to the fact that in today’s NFL, having a great quarterback is absolutely necessary — but not enough. Having star power at the wide receiver, tight end and running back positions — also very advantageous — but not enough. Offense wins championships, but in order to beat the best, a team has to have a very good defense as well.

What Is Happening In The Congo?
The off-again-on-again civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is flaring up anew. Neighboring countries blame each other, regional forces clash, and claims are made that mercenaries are present. What are we to make of this dragging conflict? I will risk a brief summary that will probably enrage several governments who have differing world views.

Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda
What did we learn in the first round of the NFL playoffs? Three things. One: offense wins championships, but a team has to have a defense that is at least competent. Two: even great passing teams need to be able to run the ball when the situation demands it. And three: don't let the commercials fool you — the NFL is ‘no country for old men’!

Time To Ante Up
The NFL regular season is over, and the 14 playoff teams are known. Some fans follow games every week, and others just follow now and then, usually focusing on their favorite team or a few favorites. In the postseason, most fans want to express their opinions and make their predictions on every playoff match, so let's have at it! Dust off your crystal balls; it's Wild Card Weekend.

NFL Finale Will Reveal Who Cares
The change in a calendar year is apparently not a guarantee of anything. Reflecting the concerns America had last year — in politics, health, economics, and more — the nation’s favorite spectator sport enters 2023 with a large cloud hanging over it. A spate of events, some never before seen, have us scrambling for answers. But they have not silenced those who take up the old cry: ‘The show must go on’!

The Mania Of A New Year
I rarely take time to write about the larger meaning behind sports — life as an athlete — and the reasons why we watch sports. But a certain once-a-year event provides a good opportunity. Sports psychology is human psychology. Yes, this psychology is applied to one very specific realm — competitive sports — and then filtered down even further to a specific sport. But I wonder: is it very different than the way we feel about our shortcomings and our successes in other walks of life?

Legendary Newswoman Barbara Walters Passes Away at 93
The pioneering newswoman was a role model for many who came after her, both female and male broadcasters. She was the first female co-anchor for a major news program, The Today Show, in 1974 and created The View--in a field that had been male-dominated. But just what was it about Ms. Walters that made her shine?

Entering The Home Stretch
The 2022 NFL season is almost in the books. At the top of the stretch, the leaders are racing for the finish line. Four division titles have now been claimed, but neither conference has a number-one seed. With two byes, four division titles, and five playoff spots still up for grabs, very few horses will be trotting at a canter this weekend.

The Night Before . . . Sunday
Gather ‘round, boys and girls, for a tall winter tale with lions and tigers and bears, oh, my. You'll hear of families gathered around the hearth, watching big men toil away on cold, snowy nights — maybe even rain, dear. Ok, I’ll admit: this story is about pigskins — and not animals with red noses — or pulling a sleigh. I’d really rather not say the ‘C’ word, but while the groundhog predicts six more weeks of football, you-know-what comes just once a year.

A Look Back at Tootsie
Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange starred in the classic film Tootsie, directed by Sydney Pollack with the screenplay by Larry Gelbart and Murray Schisga. Released in December of 1982, the satirical romantic comedy was praised by feminists and critics alike. It's worth taking a look.

A Slow Motion Train Crash Announced
Another Syria - Iraq - Afghanistan war? Maybe not, but as the degeneration of these states into war and anarchy could and should have been foreseen and prevented, so can and should the coming conflict in the Mozambique Channel. It may be already late, but not too late. That is if the international community would push for relatively inexpensive political reform instead of expensive wars.
